Spectra

This project is a promotional site for the Polaroid Spectra. The goal of this project was to sell just how cool and quirky the camera itself is. I did this by highlighting what makes this camera different from polaroids other offerings. I took note of it’s flip up design, unique film size, and it’s 80’s / 90’s visual design. My approach took several forms, all of which are highlighted below.

Establishing the Object

First things first I actually have to show what it looks like. I took a variety of different photos, capturing the camera from several different angles. The photos themselves also received some minor editing. My goal with the photo treatments was to replicate the characteristics of 90’s print ad photography, in terms of the luminescent qualities. The overall dynamic range was reduced, with shadows being brought up by a little.

Interacting With the Object

My goal with this project is to facilitate some form of interaction between the user and the product. I used the photos I took and edited, and created an interactive gallery. This interactive gallery allows the user to cycle through 4 primary angles of the product, with transitions between each individual angle. They can also view the camera in it’s closed or open orientation, both of which feature all of the same angles in the gallery. The gallery was also coded from the group up using jQuery.

The Film

The film for the spectra is unique from polaroids normal lineup. It has a larger size and a different aspect ratio. I felt that the best way to communicate this was to just show it. The site cycles between 8 different photos, determined by an RNG. This displays a variability, and adds a unique element to each users experience.

90's influence

This project features influence from late 80’s / early 90’s design. While the overall layout may not wear this, the minor formal elements are influenced by this era. The header typeface “modula tall” bears some resemblance to the type on the old cover of “neuromancer,” the photos are treated in a way inspired by 90’s print, and the border elements are inspired by work found in a computer graphics book from 1994. Overall, the 90’s influence on this project was minor, but considered.
